CONTENT MEDIA ACQUIRES RIGHTS TO WHITNEY HOUSTON DOCUMENTARY 'WHITNEY CAN I BE ME'

Los Angeles, CA – March 2, 2017 – Content Media  announced today that it has acquired worldwide sales rights (excluding North America and UK TV) to the Whitney Houston documentary feature “WHITNEY Can I Be Me,” which tells the story of the iconic performer’s extraordinary life and tragic death.

Content’s EVP Sales and Distribution, Jonathan Ford, is selling the documentary feature.

Award-winning filmmaker Nick Broomfield (“Kurt & Courtney”, “Tales of the Grim Sleeper”) directed with Rudi Dolezal (known for this films on Queen and Falco) and produced the film through his Lafayette Films banner with Marc Hoeferlin.  The film is executive produced by John Battsek, Shani Hinton, Charles Finch,  Ben Silverman and Patrick Holland.

“Whitney ‘Can I Be Me’” was financed by Showtime and BBC Two, which own North American distribution rights and UK rights (TV), respectively.  Nick has worked closely with Vinnie Malhotra (Showtime) and Patrick Holland (BBC) throughout the production.  The film which world premieres in TriBeCa next month is slated for release later this year.

Content’s Ford said: 'We are excited to be working on Nick's hard hitting and revealing first ever film about Whitney Houston that will certainly grip audiences around the world.  Whitney’s fans all over the world will relish seeing exclusive footage and hearing her extraordinary voice again.  This documentary is adding to Nick’s catalogue that Content Media already manage and see continued strong interest in.'

The film, made with largely never before seen footage and recordings, tells Whitney Houston’s incredible and poignant life story with insights from those closest to her.

She was the epitome of superstar, an ‘American Princess’, the most awarded female artist of all time.

‘Can I Be Me’ was her most used expression according to her band members. Whitney used it so much that they sampled it and would play ‘Can I Be Me’ at the start of rehearsals. Whitney’s dilemma was even though she had made millions of dollars, had more consecutive number ones than The Beatles, and become recognised as having one of the greatest voice of all time, she still couldn’t do what she wanted to do either professionally or in her personal life..

In addition to “WHITNEY CAN I BE ME,” Content’s impressive international sales slate includes the comedy AN ACTOR PREPARES starring Jeremy Irons and Jack Huston; the documentary ELIÁN executive produced by Academy Award® winner Alex Gibney, the sci-fi mystery ORIGIN UNKNOWN starring Katee Sackhoff; Sundance’s CRIES FROM SYRIA directed by Academy Award® nominee Evgeny Afineevsky; Dan Bush’s supernatural thriller heist THE VAULT, starring James Franco, Francesca Eastwood, Taryn Manning and Scott Haze; the Manolo Blahnik documentary MANOLO: THE BOY WHO MADE SHOES FOR LIZARDS;  action-thriller THE WORKER, starring Michael Peña, directed by action director Dan Bradley and produced alongside Jeremy Renner’s company The Combine; a documentary feature about the inspiring, Olympic hero turned convicted murder Oscar Pistorius (PISTORIUS); the Maria Callas biopic CALLAS & ONASSIS, starring Noomi Rapace with Niki Caro directing; the documentary BESIDE BOWIE: THE MICK RONSON STORY, directed by Jon Brewer; and Sci-Fi epic feature HIGHER POWER.
